Before you reach or after you leave our wonderful island group, you probably have to or want to spend a night or two in a small town nearby while waiting for your flight. But where to stay? There are good options, and bad ones.
Here are our favorites, the ones where we prefer stay while traveling.
Ampana
TripleR homestay
A lovely small homestay with unique decoration and the best food&breakfast in town. They only have 2 bungalows, so make sure you contact Dadang, the owner, before you arrive. He also speaks perfect English and is great information source for everything you want to know about the Togeans or transportations. Sometimes they also do music sessions in the TripleR cafe and if you know how to hold a guitar, you are very welcome to join! Did I already mention they have pizza & spaghetti?
Lawaka
The most hotel like hotel in Ampana. Especially the new VIP rooms in the back are great value and give you the most peaceful (silent) sleep in town. Hot water, AC, buffet style Indonesian breakfast. Also a good cafe/restaurant attached with occasional live music. Great location just by the sea.
Marina Cottages
Located directly at the (rocky) beach, Marina offers you many different bungalow options. The ones facing the sea are definitely worth the extra penny. Good breakfast, amazing sunsets.
Luwuk
Santika, Swiss-Belinn, Estrella
All these three up to 4* hotels are located on a hill with great sea views. From quality they are very similar and definitely the best value you can get in Luwuk. All located near the airport and they offer free pick ups&drop offs. Also immigration is close by if that's your reason to visit Luwuk.
All have a pool and decent western food in the restaurant. Estrella has also wood fire pizza oven! For local food you better visit a local warung, where the value for money is much better and the fish more fresh. Also don't waste your money on a massage.
We usually book the one which has the best price on booking.com or Traveloka. As said, they are all pretty much the same :)
Igora
For a cheaper option Igora is our choice. Located between the airport and the city center, they have simple rooms for smaller money. Decent option for one night.
Palu
Hannah Homestay
Amazing little eco friendly homestay with good quality nicely designed rooms and a lush garden. Grape wines in front of the rooms and an organic garden on the back. The owner is super friendly and helpful & speaks very good english. Close to the airport, breakfast included. Superclean!
Bamboo Homestay
A newish homestay with well designed and clean rooms and lovely & helpful owners. Great value for money. Also close to the airport. A good choice for a night or longer stay.
Poso
Unfortunately so far we haven’t found anything worth mentioning in Poso. If you fly from Poso, better you take a car early in the morning from Ampana, or spend the night a bit further away in Tentena right by the Poso lake. If you know a nice place to stay, let us know and we'll test it the next time we pass by Poso!
